I've been looking at a lot of job postings lately for EFL positions in Japan, and many of them request that you send a professional picture with your resume. Should I invest the money to go to a studio (like the kind in JCPenny)? Or can I just take a photo of myself in a suit (like a passport photo) and send that in? I have no idea what employers expect. Since I'm unemployed at the moment it would be nice to save money by just taking my own photo, but if getting a professional portrait done will increase my chances of getting an interview/getting hired I would definitely be willing to invest the money. Also, any suggestions on where I can get a portrait taken without paying an arm and a leg would be appreciated (I live in Southern California).
Thanks!

Yes, a passport-type photo would be sufficient. When employers state they want a "professional photo", they just mean they don't want a shot of you doing a beer bong at a frat party.

Professional means they just want you in professional attire with a neutral background. Take it yourself (or have a friend help), or if you don't trust yourselves, go to a place that does passport photos.
