Not if you are an ALT in which case you get the Instructor visa. Of course there are those with Dependant visas, Spouse visas and WHVs.
Does he have a valid re-entry permit with that extention? If not, it is invalid and he needs to go through the visa process from scratch. |

Yeah, if he had just paid 6000 yen (or even 2000 or whatever the single costs) for a re-entry permit he could have used it again. Going to be a lot of extra effort to make up for that. |

The above is correct- leaving without a re-entry permit and handing over your alien registration card means the end of that visa, regardless of what stamps are on it. Having had a visa before means that his next visa will be likely to be approved, but the application process is exactly the same, right from scratch. |
