Why would someone need to work in EFL ASAP?

Visa applications alone may take 2 months or more, depending on the country.

If you are on the ground in Mexico City you can have a job within a few days, legally or not. Even legally, the vast majority of schools will let you go ahead and start working while your visa is being processed.

Where do you want to work?
You could get on the ground on a non-visa country a be working within days, assuming you have some qualification. I know, I did it in Buenos Aires Smile

Totally depends on the country, and the job.

YOu could probably be working in MExico or much of latin America within days.

On the other hand, my wife's current employer (in Korea) hired her something like 8 months before she started.

It really depends. Like glenski, I wonder about "needing" to start immediately, though. Getting overseas takes some planning and readiness.

If you're broke and need to start working right away (for example, I don't know your situation) can I respectfully suggest that it's not a good way to get started.

If you're up against a wall, for whatever reason, it reduces your ability to chose. And ability to choose is going to be important in having a good experience at this!

Best,
Justin

Yes, there are places, usually due to poor planning, or a teacher leaving, or backing out of a job. If that's the case, more often than not, you will be told to enter X country on a tourist visa and either border hop or change it in country.

Howeever, you run the risk of them not changing your visa.

asap usually means working illegally - entirely possible in China and Vietnam. I wouldn't think was a desirable thing, but it seems there are as many illegal workers as legit ones here in China
