I'm currently in the process of deciding on where to go once I've completed my Celta which will be around October. From what I've read from a few posters here Uraguay sounds quite attractive but I've also read it's more likely I'll only find work being there as opposed to having a position lined up for when I arrive.

But after a very quick look at how much a flight would cost (800GBP) and then the money it would cost to live before I get regular work set-up, off the top of my head, I could be looking at being roughly 1500GBP out of pocket. And then, it could take me the best part of a year to recuperate that in terms of savings...I don't like the sound of having to spend a year to get back to square one. From those who are in S.A., am I right?

You're absolutely right. That's the way it works here. If the money matters to you, maybe consider doing your first couple of years in Asia?

Have you thought about Mexico? Not in South America but Spanish-speaking if that's an attribute you're looking for. Cheaper flight over and you're likely to earn a bit more than you would in most SA locales.

Spanglish, that is something I'm considering, I've already spent one year in Korea and saved good money, it might be worthwhile doing another....hmmm

Guy Courchesne, I've never actually thought about Mexico. If it's a place to stuff my coffers for awhile before moving further south then it might be worthwhile. I don't want to eat into the small amount of savings I have so the sooner I can recuperate the costs of getting over there the better...I'll have to take a look at the Mexico forum. Thanks.

In Bogota: high cost of living, low pay, high requirements for qualifications (unless you have palanca i.e. know somebody on the inside who's perhaps a bit corrupt). A DELTA will fetch you $1,000-$3,000/month with visa, no accommodation, no flights (unless you get hired from abroad for the British Council).

I'm slowly building up private students, but it's a lot of legwork for not that much more money. I keep hoping though that I'll catch a lucky break.

By the way, about 6 months ago I was a breath away from moving to Montevideo. I decided to come back to Bogota for a number of reasons, but am still really interested in Uruguay. I think you should go so you could share the first in-depth report on teaching English there! It sounds like a beautiful, peaceful place...

Umm, this doesn't match any of the COL info I've seen for South America. Just the opposite, in fact.
