They are offering 4900CNY. The university is in a rural, but central location. Is this reasonable/appropriate? How much of this do think I'd be able to save up for a rainy day?

Now that I look at the exchange rate I'm thinking most of my savings will go to a ticket home once a year. Are there any cheaper ways to get from China to the US on vacation?

Also, I'm kind of holding out for a position as an International Student Services Coordinator for the next semester at a local university in the US. They are supposed to make a decision this month. I'm intrigued by this Chinese university though and don't want to screw up my chances... so, how long do I dare wait before answering with an official yes or no?

Was it a 3 page contract? If so, wait a day, then tell them you're interested. I did that, and they then sent me the SAFEA contract with Addendums. So you have some time. I imagine universities handle this contract process similarly. But I'm new to this.
OK, now for a comment by someone who knows. Miles?

Concerning how long you can wait - schools are starting to scramble now. They don't want to get strung along for two weeks and then have you decide not to sign, ruining all of their plans for the coming semester. So... your job offer is not exclusive. At this point, each day that you don't sign the contract is a day they are going to spend trying desperately to recruit another teacher. My e-mail inbox has blown up this week.

Depending on the school and the overall desirability of the job, you may have plenty of time. After all, there are schools each year that never manage to fill their positions, period. But, you never know.

Concerning the salary - In a rural location, you could potentially save 3900CNY/month, depending on your eating and drinking habits (a lot of foreigners do too much of both, which is why they're so, um, attractive). What are the teaching hours? 12-16, you'll have plenty of time to either teach private students or even get another full-time job at a training school and teach all weekend. Also, your school should cover a roundtrip ticket each year.

Usually it's in the contract that they will reimburse you for a ticket back home annually (if not a round trip ticket)

In a rural location you won't spend nearly as much, although it can be more difficult to set up private lessons in smaller, poorer towns.
