Hi All,
I'm very sorry as I know this will have been asked and answered countless times before but my search function does not seem to work! It just shows me a black page :-/
I am going to head to Madrid in September and look for work. How much money would you suggest I have behind me?
Any advice would be very warmly received!

Hard to say without knowing your spending habits, level of experience, and where you'll be staying, but my guess would be that, to be comfortable, you should have at least 3,000 euros at your disposal. You probably won't receive any pay until the end of your first working month, and it's unlikely that you'll find work immediately. But I'm sure other posters with Madrid experience can offer better advice ... Good luck! |

If you arrive on the first of September, schools will be starting to interview then, with a view to getting you started at any time from immediately to mid-October. The trouble is, many academies bid for contracts and need teachers lined up for them, only to find that the final client has gone with another school. Moral of the this: you go for as many jobs as possible, and take the first one that offers you actual work that is actually starting.
Anyway, back to the money thing: you need to cover rent and living for 2 months as you get paid at the end of the month and your first month might be a bit threadbare work-wise. Also, your first 2 weeks may well be in a hostel while you look for a flat/room.
So, room/bed in very basic hostel: 25/night plus food & transport, so 50/day (so get a room as soon as possible!)
Room in shared flat: 350/month more or less, studio flat from about 650/month. Deposit on room in shared flat usually 1 months rent, on a flat is a lot more, usually 2 months, possibly also one months finders fee if through an agency (so go for a room first).
Living is pretty cheap here in Madrid if you steer clear of too much partying until you're settled, though later on you may well find that going out is one of the main activities here.
So you are looking at around absolute minimum 2000 euros, best to bring 3000 as the previous poster mentioned.
Some schools will pay you an advance on hours worked, but not all of them.
Hope this helps, best of luck!
