Hi guys,

I'm an asian-canadian with a Tesol certificate. My aim was to get a teaching job in china or taiwan back when I got my TESOL last year .. but after a few months of trying I found it really difficult and maybe I'm not that great with teaching.

I really like taiwan and I'm thinking of going there without first finding a job. I have a business-related degree and some design background.

Anyone have any ideas about going there to find a professional starter/entry-level job on a tourist visa?

Thanks!!

What you're thinking about doing is completely illegal.

There is absolutely nothing illegal about looking for a job on a tourist visa. If looking for a job on a tourist visa is illegal, then why does the Taiwanese immigration visa offer an in-country upgrade from tourist visa to work visa?

OP, it would help us to know if you speak Chinese (more importantly, do you speak it WELL, and are you literate in 漢字), and whether you have any special advantages like dual Taiwanese citizenship (I assume you don't since you got a tourist visa, but you could be one of those draft dodgers who comes in on his foreign passport just to avoid the military, so just checking).

BTW, it might not be the best idea to ask about this on Dave's. Not that the guys in the Taiwan forum are that bad (compared to the arrogant "we're superior to everyone else" bravado on the Japan forum, or the "I feel like flaming random people I've never met" of the Korea forum), but I've tended to notice that most English teachers in general have tunnel vision. Anytime you ask them "are there other jobs available besides teaching," they tend to say "NO! THERE AREN'T! THEY'D NEVER HIRE A FOREIGNER TO DO JOBS OTHER THAN TEACH ENGLISH! IT'S IMPOSSIBLE! CAN'T BE DONE! [sticks fingers in ears] NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA!"

Having done various types of paid work in Asia besides teaching English, I am fully aware that yes, it is possible to get hired for jobs other than English teaching. Heck, when I was a little (foreign) boy living in Seoul, both my mom and dad were employed, neither in the EFL sector. I'm sure there are jobs out there, but people in this forum are unlikely to know about them. If I were you, I'd start by looking on tealit.com on the "More Jobs" tab (separate from the "Teaching Jobs" tab). However, I haven't looked into it much since I only plan to be here until March.

Rooster_2006

Thanks for the reply!

I can read and speak mandarin quite fluently but my family isn't taiwanese so I don't have that whole military-issue .. plus, I'm a girl ...ha. But does being a fluent mandarin-speaking asian give me an advantage in my case? *Sigh*

I have checked out tealit.com's "Other Jobs" tab but found nothing that fits my resum or interests ... any other suggestions?

Thanks!

OP,

Ignore this post. Many (most?) people first come to Taiwan on a landing visa and find TEFL jobs.

I didn't know about the "upgrade" that is supposedly now possible to transition from a landing visa to a work visa / ARC.

When was that changed? I thought one had to leave the country and return on a 30 day / 60 day extendable visa.

True.

Who said this? Because it wasn't me.

I said an upgrade is possible from a tourist visa. Not a landing permit.

Rooster,

I was under the impression that there are no "Tourist Visas" in Taiwan.

When did Taiwan start issuing Tourist Visas?

True, to be technical, there is only a "landing permit " and a "visitor's visa."

So OP, if you apply for a visitor's visa (hefty fee, must get it at a Taiwanese embassy or consulate), you can upgrade to a work visa later. Not so with the landing permit you get if you fly to Taiwan without any visa. If you did that, you'll need to make a visa run.

There are many non-teaching jobs to be had, it just takes some looking. Tealit and Forumosa both have sections entitled "other jobs" which usually have business related job posts. If you are fluent in Chinese, you may try the translation route for a while too. There are many overseas study centers in Taipei that look for translators to do student study plans and recommendation letters. This is seasonal work though, as the demand comes during the university application periods in Europe and North America, worth a try while you are waiting for something else....good luck...
