UKH is currently advertising. Does anyone have any current knowledge of what it is like to work there? Both at the University and in the region?

Where does one begin!!!! UKH is once again going through turmoil due
to a rash of terminations, resignations and forced deportations of academic staff. The English Department head was threatened with a $5million dollar
lawsuit which he rightly deserved----over the last 3 years he caused an
extreme amount of damage to the reputation of the university locally.
More than half of the students which started the program 3 years ago have been thrown out based on standards ,which to this day remain unknown.
The government had to step in and paid for these students to attend local
private universities. The students argued that the Access program was
staffed by teachers who lacked the appropriate English teaching certification
and many of them lacked the government mandated M.A. requirement for
university instructors.

To the University's credit- it seems it did, in fact, step in and curtail a growing academic elitism which existed at its inception and grew with each year. For a awhile, department heads got together and decided that they would no longer teach classes but would instead spend their time administering and doing research. The total student population at the university was about 400 at this time. You have to remember that Kurdistan is a
developing region and the $6000-8000 a month salaries of these
Professors is a huge chunk of change in this part of the world.

UKH does have good housing, salary, and benefits for its teaching staff.
Erbil has things to do--good restaurants and night life in the Christian
district -Ainkawa

Just do a google search of UKH and all the juicy drama is there for all
to see. As for who are the real victims and villains-- you decide.
