|
|
| I'm sorry for asking such a stupid question, but I can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere. I know that the Japanese school year starts in April, but I'm not sure when exactly are classes in session and when aren't they. Wikipedia is pretty confusing on this. Is the summer break two months? How long is the winter break? Does this vary from school to school? Can someone just give me an outline of a typical Japanese academic year? |

Exact dates will depend on the university sometimes.
Essentially, my own uni has final exams in the first week of August, but some schools will be finished by then. I have to return to classes in October, but those other schools that finished before me will probably start earlier, too.
Rough estimate is that summer break starts in late July and finishes in late September.
Winter break for me runs from just before Xmas to mid January, but I think some schools in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu may have shorter times due to different climate. |

Thanks, Glenski--fast response and exactly the info I needed. I'm quite surprised--from what I've heard, Korean universities have 5 months or so of breaks throughout the year. I thought Japan would offer something similar. Maybe I should go to Korea instead... |

The university I teach at is like this:
First term: first week of April - end of July
(vacation August & September)
Second term: first week of October - end of February
(vacation March)
There's also Golden Week at the beginning of May, and about 2 weeks off for the New Year holiday.
But 5 months in Korea? Maybe I'd better look into that too.... |

Well, There are no classes at my uni in the entire month of March, so you can add that. Of course, unless I take time off, I am still expected to be in my office during those times. |
