|
|
I have sent my CV and photo, plus scanned document to probably 300 places - only about 5 responses from real school or recruiters.
Have BS in education and 10 years of various USA teaching experience.
Getting alot of tanked responses asking for the same info I just emailed.
Some responses to take tefl courses or do volunteer work.
Lots of spam.
I am considering doing a Tefl in China just to get my foot in the door and get the z visa - though that costs money and pay tends to be low.
Mostly applying to China - but some other countries as well.
Is this normal to get so few responses from the schools or recruiters? |

Is it a cultual thing then? - wait till the last day and think teachers can magically have a visa and fly over in 24 hours?
If it takes an average of 4 weeks for the visa - and they want teachers Sept 1 - then they are procrastinating.
I have been applying since April for the most part - over and over - now intensly sending out info. |

I started talking to this school in early May, confirmed the terms of the contract in late May. My last RP expired July 15. I got the new one July 14. I was sweating it. |

I can definitely relate. I am in a similar position. I have and advanced degree, although not in Education or English, and have been shocked at how many resumes I have sent out with no responses. and I have been applying to many different countries (well, the better-paying ones). But having an Ed. degree, I am even more shocked at your situation.
When I send in applications through a Japan job site, I'll often get an auto-response that says something like, "We have submitted your resume. Yours is one of 362 we have gotten for this position."
Has the economic downturn made it this hard to find a job now? |

Hi
I agree it is most inconsiderate of companies - whether tefl related or not - no to inform applicants of their decision whether or not to move your application forward.
What baffles me is that it is so simple just to keep a brief standard message on outlook outlining the company's decision on a particular matter and then bcc the message to all those who need to be informed of the decision. It might be rather impersonal but at least the applicant knows where he/she stands.
I guess many companies simply 'can't be bothered', which is an attitude that is most prevalent in the country where I am working.
Maybe I am just old-fashioned but, consideration for others is something that doesn't enter many people's minds in the current era.
Best

The better schools and jobs were recruiting last spring for jobs in Sept (or at least that was my personal experience).
What you will find now are the ASAP positions where the recruited teacher fails to show, language schools (who don't want a real teacher) and a few gems in the rough but they will be few and far between.
A google for "SAFEA" [State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs], or "ANESL" should give you some better ideas.
But as an assurance, this really is off-season for Sept. hires (late already) so your experience is not unusual nor unexpected.

LOTS of places don't read their emails. They just send a copy and paste response. Others might want you to be in country for a job. But the fact that you're applying to China, that's a different story. I've often got responses within hours from China.
Also, are you cold emailing schools or applying to adverts. If it's the former, expect a copy paste reply. |
