Veteran RAK watchers will be interested to read the following Middle East Institute blog, at
http://mideasti.blogspot.com2010/06/american-university-of-rak-drastically. html
AURAK has drastically cut back on its administration; and as one of the respondents says, not before time. There is nothing much 'American' about this shoddy outfit, even less since they have dumped the much hated American woman president, SS. It is run by a strange crowd of people, mostly from the Subcontinent.

But the bloggers have got it wrong in one respect. The belief that having inadequate English might be cause enough to dismiss administrators in what represents itself as an American university is unfounded. The two senior adminstrators hanging over from the infamous George Mason campus days have not only been retained. One of the linguistically challenged pair is the new President!

Wasn't it the Peter Principle that managers eventually get promoted to the level of their own incompetence? In AURAK, it seems, the lunatics have taken over running the asylum.

Doesn't much matter either way, since no one in their right mind would seek employment there, particularly if they were familiar with RAK.

GMU seemed okay for some people for a time, but it was mostly considered an inferior option to the HCT- which of course has not been without its own problems at certain periods.

That link doesn't work even with 'html' added. Has it been deleted or is the link misspelled somwhere?

Here is a link to an article in The National (June 23): http://www.thenational.ae/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100624/NATIONAL/706239878/1010

I got to it by going to the link provided earlier but cutting off all but
the http://mideasti.blogspot.com and then just scrolling down. I came to another item re RAK and the poster made a comment about it being the second post recently about RAK. I clicked on it and it took me to:
http://mideasti.blogspot.com2010/06/american-university-of-rak-drastically which was posted June 24. There was a link to The National in the post.

Thanks for that. The piece in The National is informative. The blog, less so.

Boldface mine. I talked to a former student of mine from GMU days who is still at AURAK (same "campus," different management) and who will receive his degree next spring from GMU as per agreement. He said the Nazi SS person was fired in disgrace.
