Personally I would be reluctant. I spent a week in the Wulumuqi area during a summer three or four years ago. The city itself did not impress me, but the surrounding scenery is spectacular. Even then, before the most recent disturbances in Wulumuqi, I was shocked to see three-man Chinese patrols appear in the Muslim sector around sunset, one man toting a submachine gun. There's a lot of unrest simmering on the backburner, and I would not like to be around if it boils over again. |
