Does anyone think it would be useful to do a CALL course with Global TESOL before applying for jobs in the ME? I think it would look good on my CV, but how much emphasis is there really on computer assisted language learning over there? |

I expect it may be more helpful for you personally than giving you an edge on your CV. But, it can't hurt.
It would be interesting to hear how much it is being used these days... and whether it is used as part of a class or as a self-access situation.

Thank you for that...but my lack of meaning in my response is a reflection of the lack of meaning that a CALL cert would have on yer career as VS hinted after me. CALL is last century's car model.
If'n yer interested in briefly catchin' the eye of a C.V. reader, then you want to learn a platform like BlackBoard or get into some "SmartBoard" training.
you've got yer head goin' in the right direction...stay away from dinosaurs that would only fill in a niche market that lacks funds or refuses to embrace modern classroom technologies.

Theoretically... couldn't Blackboard and Smartboard etal be included under the term CALL? They are, after all, computer assisted learning... or perhaps more accurately computer assisted teaching.

I wouldn't disagree per se, but SnB (I'm sure) and I, when we hear CALL conjure up RSAF/RSADF folk in a room...each at a booth...with headphones on...and the instructor at the front of the room playing a language cassette tape of whatever DLI book that they were supposed to be in...and the "students" sitting in the booths...texting their friends...
That's what CALL means to me...

That's a language lab... and I wouldn't consider that CALL at all. There is no computer involved.
CALL in my experience was taking them to a computer lab full of desktop computers and printers... most of which worked most of the time... where there were various programs on the computers related to usually grammar and reading.
Besides... when you were doing language lab and I was doing CALL, there were no such thing as cellphones... excuse me... mobiles or GSMs... or texting.

What you most correctly call language lab, the saudi military called CALL. With a staffroom consisting of 20, the military provided us with one desktop clunker and NO printer. I was known for getting things done with my laptop and portable printer...
