I'm heading to Turkey to teach for a year or two May 30, 2010. I'd like a teaching position by September--if possible. (Have a MA-TESOL and 20+ years ESL/EFL experience in U.S. colleges/universities.) At the big TESOL Conference in Boston in May, I interviewed with Yasar University, Izmir and liked the exchange. Since then, I've received a job offer. But in this forum, there have been a number of discouraging stories about the students at Yasar and their treatment of teachers too. Most of those stories were at least 1 1/2 year ago. I'd really appreciate hearing from some folks who have direct and recent experience. I don't want to miss an opportunity--or step into a torture chamber either!

Hi Carol,
I was at the convention too and got a job offer for teaching at Yasar University! I was hoping to find some more up to date information about the university and work environment before accepting the job. Hopefully someone will reply Maybe I'll see you over there next year! Take care. |

Are either of you going to Yasar next year? I have accepted a position and would love to connect!

Erm... Isn't the thread from the last seven days referring to the academic year that just ended recent enough for you? There are three different people with pretty damning comments.

If you were interviewed for the job at the TESOL Conference then you have already met the man who, if you actually come to Yasar, will turn into your worst nightmare along with is Ozzy sidekick the poisoned dwarf. Read the posts even the older ones Yasar is and always has been seriously bad news.

By all accounts, not just from this forum but others who actually worked there and I've spoken to in person it is a place to avoid. Now on the other hand, the OTHER private uni is worth a look unless someone else knows different!
