Okay, I hate to be yet another clueless person but I AM! Anyway, I am extremely interested in teaching abroad (don't even have a particular place in mind yet). However, I am not the "usual" from what I've seen. I'm not necessarily interested in teaching English abroad, I would like to obtain a job as a Librarian or even just a regular classroom teacher if necessary. I am a single 27 (almost 28...ugh!) year old female who would travel alone. I have 5 years teaching experience teaching Technology classes and Library to elementary students. I have a degree in Elementary Education, am certified in Library from K-12, and have a Master's degree in Technology Education. I am also currently pursuing a degree in Library Science. What can I say...I love school! Very Happy

I have heard about some of the recruiting companies such as ISS and Search Associates, but is this really the way to go? I hate to pay someone else to promote me when I feel I can promote myself just as well; however, I know they have connections that I do not have. I also found one called Teach Away that is supposedly free, but that also worries me a little! In other words, I am completely confused!

I consider myself a resourceful person and definitely know how to use my Google! But that doesn't help much when you don't know where to start. I don't know how to figure out if a school is reputable or where to start searching. Is there even a demand for librarians or people who don't just want to teach English? The person I know who did this taught Library classes in a school in Mexico and did very well for herself.

I am interested in the travel aspect and experiencing something new for myself most of all; but, of course, money is important. I would love to go somewhere where I can work towards paying off my credit card debt and student loans.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated...and don't worry you won't hurt my feelings if you're "critical"

Uh, which is it?

Regular? What does that mean? If you want to teach subjects other than English, you have 2 options:

1. Get licensed and experienced in your home country, then shoot for international schools.
2. Go through the university system in the foreign land so that you get their degree their way and licensed through them so that you can teach in public schools. #1 is probably far easier but no cakewalk.

With your current qualifications, you seem eligible for #1. Seek out the job fairs you cited, and any others. Depending on the country, I suppose it might be better to contact schools directly or not.

Teach Away has been brought up in a thread or two recently. Do a search for it and see if it answers any of your questions.

Unless you are highly fluent in the local language, I'd say your chances of getting a librarian's job are nil except for international schools (and I have no clue what those take, but it just seems more likely).

You need to choose a country now.

I guess I should say that I am not interested in JUST teaching English. Most of the posts I've seen/info I've found on the Internet have been about people just going abroad to teach the English language. I am already certified in the U.S. for ages Birth-6th grade in regular Elementary Education and for Library all the way to grade 12.

As far as choosing a country, I guess that's why I'm here....for advice on where to go. I know everyone has their own opinions/experiences so I would just like some input.

sarakip01-

You may qualify for an IB school:

Your post seems rather strange though. Confused

International school jobs are generally better (in terms of salary, benefits, prestige, etc.) than standard entry-level language school jobs. I haven't looked into them too much, since I'm qualified in TESOL and not in content subjects, but the organizations that you listed come up often enough for me to assume that they are reputable.

If you're not sure where you want to go, look at the jobs sites and see what's available. That should narrow your search! Good luck.
