Canadian international school of English and Business Learning. Anyone heard of this school? They've offered me an hourly rate of $12 during my 3 month probationary period, with the possibility of $13.5 if i do well and student feedback is positive. In the contract I'm guaranteed 19 hours per week. What does everyone think? |

But you have seen it in real life, right? Your impressions should be important. Do a few free demo classes, that should help you make a better judgment. As far as the pay, $15 still seems to be a normal starting rate for legal employment for people who demonstrate advanced skills, regardless of experience. This is HCMC, HN may be a buck or three higher. Certainly there is the pressure of 10% unemployment in the states driving western labor down here as well, so 12 something may seem okay to you. But unless you have failed to give your potential employers a positive impression, you could probably make a bit more to start. It is a real market, it works both ways. Lots of bodies floating around out there, the 800 lb gorillas can always get plenty of staff, but the lesser schools seem to struggle to find highly skilled teachers. |

I presume this is a fake international school. Not a real international school.

Red Flags.
The backpacker rate is higher than this. Do not let the students (school) decide whether to give you a raise based on student feedback.
Why?
Because some schools will tell you that "the students compained about x," or want more of y." And they will not give you the full raise or any raise.
Of course, they won't show you anything on paper, as to how many students said this, and when the gave this feedback.
Also, do you want to students to control how much you earn, even if the school is being honest?

Are you in Vietnam?
Is your communication via the internet or in person? |

I know people who have interviewed there and they ran as fast as they could. They are looking for naive backpackers. Why? You know.
Recruiting outside of Vietnam is a BIG red flag because it means word has gotten around. |

Oooooooh yeah! This is an old scam. COMPETENT, CARING AND DEDICATED TEACHERS GOTTA LOOK OUT FOR THIS ONE -
(Allegedly), according to Vietnam labour law, a backpacker CAN WORK LEGALLY WITH NO WORK PERMIT FOR NINTY (90) DAYS!
This is why sooo many small, individually-owned private English centers will promise the world after three months....."but we just don't want to throw that money away to someone who is an unknown quantity, so, yeah....we just want to see how thingS work out after three months"
Soooo, DURING those three months, they will give you a severely sub-standard wage (and say that will be offset by a jump from $10/hr to $17/hr. "IF we like you after three months")....
......because, after three months, they see three things:
- A Tay who will have to be paid seven dollars more per classroom hour
- A Tay who will have to be gotten a work permit provided by our Center (NOT a tiny expense for the school, either)
- And, lastly, they will see the direction to the bus or train station to pick up the next backpacker as they bid you adieu.......
DO NOT fall for it....start at MINIMUM fifteen per classroom hour..... |

Sorry, I'm not the real Shane Warne. Do you really think Shane would be living in Vietnam teaching ESL? |

I'm one of the much hated backpacker teachers and I am getting paid $15 an hour from 3 different schools. I just turned up and found work here - there is lots about.
Even I would turn down $12. |

No one dislikes backpackers. We need more here! Just look what they are teaching:
-no formal education required
-fake it until you make it
-life is about the now, so why plan for the future
-as long as I get mine who cares
-young is preferable
-the secret to being a good English teacher is portraying a friendly, loving and accepting persona. No expectations from the students required. |

Good for you! Don't let all the petty haters who are a lil bitter because backpackers can show up and grab many of the same jobs they spent lots of time and money training for... (can you blame them? ) |
