Greetings,
As I was just offered a position teaching Eng @ DOA in Riyadh, I thought it would be wise to ask for some feedback from anyone out there who is either currently on staff or knows about working at that place.
I have read some posts dissing the health coverage, apts and off campus housing rentals, visas, and so on.
While I spent 3 yrs working in the Kingdom back in the mid 90's (and another at DWC), that was in Dammam and quite a while back.
So plz post something ASAP I could learn from before I sign on the dotted line!!!
Much appreciated!

Don't work at DAU but have friends who do or have done so recently.
Health coverage - basically useless, covers the Saudi minimum legal requirements but nothing more. Most teachers opted to purchase additional health insurance from their own pocket.
Housing - from what I've heard, the housing provided by the college is pretty lousy and there aren't enough apartments for all the staff. As a result, most teachers have chosen or been obliged to get the housing allowance and find their own place to live.
Visas - teachers recruited from abroad arrrived on business visas and most of these were not amended to full working visas with iqamas.
Holidays - again, cover the Saudi legal minimum but no more. 45 days in summer, and a measly 4 (4!) for each of the Eids.
On the plus side, DAU pay very well - perhaps the best in KSA outside of the oil or military instituitions - the college is very well-equipped and the working environment pleasant enough. Or so I'm told - as I say, this is all second hand information. |

Quite helpful response...I wonder whether making up the difference to compensate for the housing and insurance "challenges" hurts much financially....
Having never lived in Riyadh and not having lived in KSA for quite a while, I wonder approx how much it costs monthly to live comfortably (in SR)

Insurance for a single male should cost no more than about SR2000 a year, so it's not really a huge expense over the course of a year. Housing is a different matter. Apartments in Riyadh can be fairly cheap, and probably well within your housing allowance. Compounds are another story entirely. |

Where do I work?
To quote the late, great Jack Lemmon: "Here, there, around...."
As for KAUST, if you're interested in working there, I suggest you read some of the many threads which already exist on the subject, or start your own. |

Don't start another one!! There is a current running thread... and little is known outside of what is written on it. But it is always best to keep information on a few a threads as possible for future searchers.
VS
(BTW... it appears that DAU is adopting the Eid holidays of the rest of the Gulf. Depending on the day it begins, it can be 3-9... the highest being the odd years when it manages to include 2 weekends. So you never know until it hits how long it will be... depending on the mood of the Ministries.) |

I interviewed with several employers in the UAE, KSA and Kuwait. I have to say you will be hard pressed to beat their salary which comparative offers from other schools wasn't even close.
However with that said you will have to live in Riyadh which the only observable bodies of water are the killer flash floods that wash through there on occasion.

Jeddah has a lot more places to go and see and dahran, al khobar or dammam or much more desireable for the proximity to bahrain where you can unwind from the strict KSA environment.
As for housing, well its not as easy to get as one would think. You will be competing with expat engineers who have enormous housing allowances and for getting on a compound there currently is at least a 20 month wait list to get on one of them.
If you want a decent place to live get on the waiting lists for the compounds now
Heres a website link to them
