U.S. American Citizen Services Fees to Increase Beginning July 13, 2010
Effective July 13, 2010, a number of fees for American Citizen Services will increase. This increase is to ensure sufficient resources to cover the increasing cost of providing consular services.
The following fee increases will take effect on July 13, 2010:
* The total charge for a first-time passport book for an adult, including the application fee, security surcharge and execution fee, will increase from $100 to $135;
* The total charge for an adult passport book renewal, including the application fee and security surcharge, will increase from $75 to $110;
* The total charge for a minor passport book (under age 16), including the application fee, security surcharge and execution fee, will increase from $85 to $105;
* A new fee of US$82 will be collected for additional passport pages;
* The fee for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad will increase from US$65 to US$100;
* A new fee of US$450 will be collected for documentation of formal renunciation of U.S. citizenship;
* Notarial and authentication services, which now range from US$20 to US$30, will all be increased to US$50; and
* The application fee for passport cards will increase from US$20 to US$30 for adults, and from US$10 to US$15 for minors. |
I wonder if they had purposely given me a few page US passport renewal knowing damn well that I will have to fork out a lousy 82 bucks for additional US passport pages. What a scam! Check out the prices for paper work that barely takes any effort. How do they justify their costs? |

unreal
i recently was in the usa and had something notarized for like $5usd, then the mail lost it, so I had to have it redone at the AIT. I almost fell over when they wanted $30usd for a stamp.
Now they want $50? Totally unreasonable. |

It is truly incredible what some bureaucracies get away with. I'm glad I got my new passport pages last year, when they were still free! Man, $82, that's highway robbery. I think $2 would be more reasonable ($1 for the paper, $1 for the 30 seconds spent taping it in).
And while we're on the topic of outrageous fees for bureaucratic "services," why did I have to pay a $450 graduation fee to my college, a $420 fee to take the NYU Korean Test, and $240 every time I take a computer-delivered, multiple choice Pearson VUE exam in Taipei?
Some folks are just overpaid, plain and simple. We'll never have the opportunity, though -- only "special" people get to be overpaid, and us being here, teaching EFL means that we weren't randomly assigned to the "special" boat. |
