Dear all,

I've been offered a 2 year position at Sohar University. It would be a big change for me and a long term commitment.

For a 37.5 hour per week contract (approximately 18-20 hours teaching; classes consist of 20-25 students) They are offering (in Omani rials):

945 basic salary
250 for accommodation
80 for transport
75 for a "scarcity allowance"

I have nearly 6 years' of teaching experience. I am also just literally about to complete an MA TESOL and Delta diploma.

Should I ask for more? My aim is to land a good teaching job, but also to be able to save a good sum of money. They do not provide a furniture allowance, though they do provide some sort of baggage allowance.

Thanks in advance.

That is about as high an offer you will get in Oman without an MA (unless you are a really good negotiator and they are having trouble getting people Laughing). I know quite a few who are getting less than 1100 OR. Furniture allowances aren't seen in Oman either.

You might attempt to add a clause put in the contract for a salary rise upon receipt of your MA. Worth a try...

Your first year, a good chunk of your salary will be taken up with settling in and buying a car. It is the second year where you can save a larger part. (which is why one year contracts are such a waste of money) Also, remember that you will be able to sell the car and furniture when you leave and get part of that back. Many choose to lease a car instead of buy... definitely do that at first until you know that the job meets your requirements for a stay of a contract or two. Economically speaking that is gone money... but may be a better choice if you only stay for two years. If you think you will stay longer, buying makes more sense.

Are they including RT airfare? They should. Which company? I do not think it is allowed to put the complete name here of who is hiring you but you can pm me.
Not all recruiters are equal. There are some you want to avoid.

You can post the recruiter name (most of them advertise here), just don't use the names of any individuals that you may be dealing with. Cool

V.S, do you have any insight as to why the ministry takes so long granting work visa's?

No matter how long you are in that part of the world, there are just some questions that can never be answered. Confused There could be an issue with your credentials or the security clearance or none of these, but just buried in the shuffle. This often depends on the efficiency of your employer.

I'm not sure about Sohar U and whether they direct hire now or use recruiters.
