I'm moving to Kanto area at the end of this month, and will likely be moving into a completely bare apartment. I noticed someone mentioned http://classifieds.japantoday.com which seemed to have some good stuff posted... anyone know of any other websites/boards/places I can look for used apartment stuff?
Aside from that, what I'm wondering is how to get that used stuff moved into my apartment... I guess I might be able to carry most things aside from a fridge and washer/dryer unit. What's the best/cheapest method to have these things picked up and delivered (assuming I have no friends with a car)?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers. |

When I bought a used washing machine, the store shipped it to my home and installed it. Can't remember at what service charge. |

Oh, yeah I've noticed some classified ads saying they'll deliver, but most of the stuff posted is just buying from other people as opposed to a store so I'm assuming it'll probably be up to me to get it shipped |

You would have to pay for shipping unless buying it from a shop. If it is in-town, you can use the subways, as long as the item is not too big. There is Black Cat shipping, which friends of mine used and said they were good.
Buying things second hand is often good. I bought most of my products second hand and had no problem with them. Some people are not in Japan long enough to wear things out, so you may be getting an excellent deal. |

Thx for the reply...
Anyone have any idea how much it might cost to ship something like a fridge and washer/dryer unit about, let's say, 50 km across town? (via Black Cat or similar delivery service)? |

Hi Guile...
I can't give you an exact price about that but it is expensive. I once enquired about moving a bed from Roppongi to Shinjuku and the guy quoted me 16 000. I didn't enquire anywhere else so I don't know how other companies compare.
When I moved last time, I hired a van and moved the stuff myself... sugoi mendokusai but cheap! 11 000 for the day to move everything! If you had a few things to pick up in one day, it would be worth you hiring a van.
Where exactly in "Kanto" will you be?
Have a GOOD shop around and check out some used appliance stores. There are lots of them in Tokyo. I tend to think the gaijin sayonara sales are more hassle than they're worth especially if you have to pay expensive moving costs. And often the things are not much cheaper than new. If you buy from a used appliance store (or buy a new appliance), they'll probably be able to deliver for a much cheaper price.
Good luck. |

Go to a recyling shop, there aren't many in central Tokyo but they abound elsewhere around the city.
Look in your local town pages under the hiragan "ri" (for recycling) and you'll locate all of them in your area. If you can't read Japanese get someone to help you.
They have loads of appliances. The chain near me will deliver for 500 yen per item. Their stuff is cheap too. You can even bargain at times.
Shop around some are much cheaper than others... |
