I just would like to get any helpful information that I can...I would be working in the area of Shenzen and would like any info about that area that I could get. I am concerned about hopefully being able to save some money but also be able to enjoy/experience living overseas...Really I will take any advice that anyone is willing to share....
Thanks,
Kelli |

Hi Kelli
There are many threads that cover ShenZhen on both this forum, and on the 'China Off Topic' forum that will give you general information and advice, but if you want something more you might need to share a little more information about you, your job, where in ShenZhen etc etc. Its a big place, with a lot of different employers, and general advice may or may not be relevant. |

Shenzhen is pretty well a new city with little history. You may develop a great social network of foreigners there, but if you go out more often you may spend more as well. And, you'd like to save as you say. One word of advice is to work on an appropriate permit and RP (purpose work) is the one. Another word of advice is to find a legit employer as there are a few with either no permit to hire foreigners or with no license to operate whatsoever there. Shenzhen schools/centers get raided more often than many other cities schools/centers on mainland and they are developing a sort of reputation. One of my friends got fined 5,000 RMB for working on a F visa there and some teachers recently had to fight an employer with apparently a fake license that folded without a notice. Local public sector is a bit safer in that sense, although it usually offers too many students in a classroom where you'll have to deal with varieties of levels and some that do not want to learn. I guess unis are the least troublesome in that respect, although some of their "international programs" offer more troubles than challenges. Gosh, I hope I haven't got too much off topic here. |

I have heard that in Shenzhen is only serving up two month F visas now and that is only with a 30 day stay. |

Does this sound like an oxymoron to you?
Anyway, Shenzhen is one of the more expensive cities in China, perhaps more
cosmopolitan than GuongZhou 100 or so km to the north. You can enjoy all
the night life and bars, but they won't be cheap. So to save is a
challenge because if you like shopping you can go nuts. You can go to Macau or HongKong on weekends if you want more action.
However, if you can watch your budget, you'll enjoy living in a thriving modern
Chinese city. There are many Ft (foreign teachers) there too.
Try to connect with some native colleagues so that they can fill you in on all the ins and outs of the local scene.
Good luck, be safe, and enjoy! |

It sounds the OP has got a job that pays lined up. Shenzhen may pay even more than GuangZhou in some cases and I don't think it is much more expensive than GZ. Macau's great to see the history. You sure may spend on some slot machines there, but if you can just enjoy the view/history. And, I wouldn't only seek FTs for info but locals that can speak some English. They know the areas and Kelli may save a few bucks as friendly locals often pay for a drink or two. |
