I've got about 5 years of ESL experience in South Korea but went back to the US for what is approaching 6 months now. It seems with the downturn of the economies throughout the west that most ESL markets are flooded with recent grads.
Where would you recommend looking of these three? Why? |

Teaching in Seoul must be discussed on the Korean board. Separate registration is required. The other two locations can be discussed here. |

K-immi is becoming a pain in the butt and it is much harder to find a decent position.
Tokyo is an even tighter job market but at least immi isn't as big a pain to deal with.
Bangkok immi can be a a pain but there is lots of work. Anything decent (in terms of pay and benefits) will require patience or connections but there is lots of work.
In all 3 cases you are kind of off-season for hiring.

Kayu, is it 100% sure that KL hiring season is Nov thru Dec? Seems these other places mentioned all start summer hiring with Fall starts. Just wanna be sure for Malaysia. Thanks. |

Don't know about Malaysia but In Thailand the main hiring season is March-April with mid May school starts.
Korea is Dec-Jan for March 2 starts. There is a 2nd hiring for mid year June-July for late Aug. Starts.
Japanese school year starts in April with most hiring happening Dec-Feb.
China is desperate and looking now to fill ASAP positions (Sept or ASAP starts). The better schools hire in the spring (April - June) for the Sept. starts for late fall for spring term starts.

I wanna do a certificate and am thinking of either cambrdge celta or trinity tesol. but i dont wanna rule out other tesol cert programs that are respectable. could anyone recommend any? I feel i'll have abetter shot at landing something decent in malaysia (or anywhere else for that matter) if I have a certificate. Right now all i have is a BA in English, 2 years teaching in korea. please advise as my contract is up here in october (korea). |

In terms of quality there are lots of decent TESOL certs out there.
Bottom line is a 120 hour program with 6+ hours of observed practicum with real ESL students.
In terms of BRAND of TESOL, CELTA is the most well known but the others are also widely accepted and considered equivalents. |

thx again.....do u know anything about the ITTT TESOL program advertsied on Dave's Homepage? Would something like that be decent enough to be almost as repsected as the Trinity TESOL? How can I gauge that? I've read thru the site, its 120 hours with observed teacheing, etc. But Im wary of sending alot of $$ to places I rarely if ever heard of, and/or studying for a certificate at a similarly unheard of plaace.
I know Kayu has answered many of my questions, but I'd like some other opinions as well, doctor! My wife and I really wanna give Malaysia a try and I'd love it if I could work there legally without a cert. for now. Malaysia has no TESOL programs at all that I can locate. If I MUST have a cert to get the work visa or even a decent job in Mlaysia, we would go as closely (in miles) as possible like Phuket or Singapore for me to do the cert. |

Typically, new semesters start in July/August and January. If you want to start in July/August, come in April and May and begin your job hunt. If you want to start in January, come in October and November and do your job search. There is no one single hiring season. |

I wonder how/why the "Tokyo" option didn't make it in on the poll?
It seems most of you are favoring Bangkok. Do any of you have experience teaching there?
I know a lot of people go there for the nightlife and all it entails but I 'plan' on keeping my stay low-key. I'll probably do a bit of language study and travel. And, work on my hobbies as always. |

With the cost of living being what it is in BKK I would suggest getting just outside the city. (I am about 90km away).
There are lots of places with decent jobs that are within an hour or so of the Big Mango, have 1/2 the costs of living (rent a nice 3 bedroom house for about $150 per month) and still be close enough to the bright lights for your weekend entertainment (with about b100 for the cost of the ride to town).
Look at the big picture and don't get lured by the bright lights.
