Any info, good or bad, about Princess Nora Bint Abdulrahman University in Riyadh?

I got an offer to start Sept. 15 on the dot, made a counter offer through the recruiter, and now silence. Maybe Ramadan is like that, but I'm getting nervous about how long it might take me to close my apartment, renew my passport, etc., once an agreement is reached, also, how you know if it's a bona fide offer? Is there supposed to be a contract?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I think that a signed contract is mandatory. I got my contract 2-3 days after I got the job offer, then I accepted the offer, they gave me the contract.

That was at the university itself. No recruitment agencies or other third parties.

I would not do anything as far as closing your apartment contract or even leaving your current job until you have your visa in hand. It took them 3 months to get me my visa back, and this was even before Ramadan started. Also, if they need you there by the 15th they will most likely bring you over on a business visa since it seems (at least from other threads) that it gets you there quicker, but thats not the way you want to go.

If they really want you, they will allow you to come when you have everything done correctly at home. I was due at my work on the 15th as well, but since they just gave me my visa a few weeks ago, I was only able to book a ticket that gave me enough time to give my current employer and place of residence notice that I was leaving. My employer is not unhappy with that and understands I will be there much later than expected.

You can only apply for the employment visa if you have a contract, so if its a bona fide offer, they will provide you a contract that you must sign and provide to the embassy for the visa.

Hope that helps Smile

When you say you "made a counter offer", what do you mean exactly? Salary negotiation? Alternative start date? This may perhaps be the reason you haven't heard anything. Some Middle Eastern employers are open to a little negotiation, but others may regard it almost as a slur on their integrity or an attempt to usurp their feudal rights as your overlord.

Thank you SO much to everyone who replied.

@helenita, I will look for a contract, then. I don't see a website to apply to the school directly, and I see some people here have gotten work through recruiters, so that doesn't seem like a red light, at least not yet.

@UmmKhadija, after reading your comment about work visas, and looking at some of the visa threads, as well as the Saudi embassy website, I see the situation is much more complicated than I originally thought. My understanding is they are offering me a work visa--they said so directly.

@PattyFlipper, "their feudal rights as your overlord", LOL, but you're scaring me a little bit. Since I'm going through a recruiter who is presumably familiar with western business culture, I trust any potential cultural misunderstandings will all come out in the wash. I read somewhere though that there are some centers that try to keep the teachers' passports--that doesn't sound right. With all the terrorist warnings on the U.S. State Department website, I should think you would want to have your passport on you at all times. I also heard they don't want you to leave the country during breaks--they're afraid you won't come back--but I would certainly want to visit friends in the region.

I do hope I get to go.

"the U.S. State Department"

It's nice to see that there are some newer posters that are not so much up themselves to realize that the U.S. doesn't have a ministerial form of government...

Yes, but the person that you are referring to was on the general discussion section referring to a Cairo job and it was her employer that told her to see the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs(sic).

Well, do you think so? Laughing

It seems Uncle Sam is in a state of fear and desperation, he is crying out to an invisible God for a support against an invisible enemy! Laughing

Firstly, it is the norm for Saudi employers to hold their employees' passports. Not all employers do it, but most do, including many of the reputable ones. Secondly, a passport is no use to you without an exit visa, which can only be obtained with the explicit authorisation of your sponsor.

Finally, if you are going to let official 'terrorist warnings' bother you, you're probably better off not going to work in the Middle East. Seriously.

I can't believe you're actually considering going to PNU. Have you read any of the older threads?

I was also offered a job there but will not be accepting.

Some people just should not come to the Middle East. If you have psychological problems about being parted from your passport that is a SIGN ! As Cleo says having a passport is not enough to get out - you need that Exit Visa stamped in your pasport ! If you cannot handle that, don't come !

Is the Princess Nora bint Abdulrahman University ready for occupation already?

The rapid rate of progress with the construction work on this 8 million Exclamation square metre site has been very impressive to watch.
There have been so many construction cranes I havent been able to count them all. Shocked

Ive heard that there is going to be a rail network to serve this massive campus with an automated train.

This Arab News article reported on the campus as a "project" as recently as 3 months ago, and,
"Both projects are due for completion in 2012". ..so take a hard hat!
