When chatting with a net recruiter, they claimed that if I received a Master of Arts in TESOL from Columbia that it would not be equivalent to a PGDE and I would not be able to go above a certain salary scale. This is very strange to me because the MA in TESOL does qualify you to become a teacher in the US, and PGDE are not offered in America. Does anyone have comments about this, is it merely a cultural difference that confused the net recruiter into saying that my salary would not be equal to that of a qualified teacher?

The Post Graduate Dip. in Education is what Americans call a "teaching credential". If you have a credential, (if you are a qualified teacher), then you can move higher up the EdB's salary scale.

A master's degree is not a teaching qualification. In the EdB's NET Scheme a grad degree does not do anything to move you up the salary scale.

A teaching qualification is what matters.

Idea Make sure that you can document every year of experience post-qualification or else it will not count.

So would:

http://www.tc.columbia.edu/academic/tesol/detail.htm?Id=Degrees+Offered&Info=Master+of+Arts+with+K-12+Certification+Track+%2838-39+points%29

Both qualify me for TEFL and let me move up the pay scale, since I will be certified as a New York state teacher?

Maybe not. It says "leading toward Initial New York State Teacher Certification". Unless you have full QTS (qualified teacher status) you won't get the full ticket on the NET prog.
