Hi,

Just looking for any recommendations on where to go for medical insurance.
I'm an EDB/NET, so want to get fees reimbursed.

(on a search, only comments I saw were from 2005 and 2007)

Thanks.

We've used BUPA for years. Never made a claim yet but from what I've heard they're better than most ...

It is difficult to get the whole of your medical insurance paid for by the NET scheme - from memory I think they only give you $1200.
I used Manulife when I was there and as it was a type of policy that was attached to some form of life insurance got some money back when I left. However I never made a claim so am not sure how good they were.
Some people use HSBC. Have you asked on the NET forums for advice as it is usually a question that most new NETs ask?

Not yet, planning to... I should probably have done that first, but oh well...
Cheers!

Thanks for your thoughts folks. Anyone else?

Public health services in HK are excellent, and quite cheap. Many NETs don't bother with insurance.

Not sure I'd call them "excellent", though they are certainly better than most places. It depends what you need them for. Let's say you get injured in a car crash then yes, you'll get good, instant treatment in HK, regardless of whether or not you have private insurance (unlike in the USA, for example). But you'll be placed in a general ward during recovery, whereas with even fairly basic (and inexpensive) private cover you'd get the option of a private room. Likewise, your aftercare would be better if you had insurance.

Another benefit of insurance - if you develop a non-serious injury or health problem you'll get quick and cost-free or subsidised treatment. Without insurance, although it will cost you little or even nothing, you will probably have to wait a long time - I've known people in HK having to wait a year or more for some things.
