I have been offered an EFL Teacher job at British Council in Riyadh and also in King Abdul Aziz Uni in Jeddah. Does any 1 work for BC in Saudi?
KAU salary is more than BC but BC has more allowances and better package.....
Any suggestions??[/b] |

BC will look better on your CV. Personally I would sooner drive a London bus than work for BC in Riyadh, but we all have choices. |

You would have alot more work at BC than you would at KAU. Riyadh is the place yo go if you get offered a lot more money. If you have pretty much the same salary Jeddah wins hands down... Middle of the desert as opposed to city on the coast.. Conservative city as opposed to more liberal city.... And the list could go on...
No beaches where you can wear normal swimwear in Riyadh, in fact you would be hardpressed to find a gym with music... Quite the opposite in Jeddah. They even let you in the resturants during prayer time...

I taught at KAU. Jeddah is beautiful. more to do. KAU is laid back, no signing in and out and they are changing the curriculum finally. BC might look better on the CV but Riyadh will drive you nuts. Take it from a guy almost lost it there. jeddah is like heaven in comparison. plus its more money at KAU. |

Personally, I would prefer to follow the example of former British PM Gordon Brown and have a root canal without anaesthetic rather than set foot inside a gym. However, friends familiar with such places tell me that there are plenty of gyms in Riyadh, presumably with music. There are also plenty of restaurants which will allow you to enter during prayer time. There are, admittedly, no beaches in Riyadh.
However, I think it's important that newcomers to the Kingdom not be given the impression that there is a huge difference in 'liberality' between Riyadh and Jeddah. Yes, the beach clubs in the north of Jeddah do provide a nice little 'oasis' from normal Saudi life, but those without the money and/or the inclination to spend a lot of time there (beach clubs do not neccessarily appeal to everyone) will likely find that daily life really isn't very different in any of KSA's major cities. As I've said before, I think Riyadh gets a bit of a bad press and the supposed 'liberal' nature of Jeddah is rather exaggerated - not to mention the fact that Riyadh is cleaner, richer and has much more modern infrastructure.
As I've also said before, first timers at least should try to find a job in one of the three major urban areas. That said, unless you have a particular reason to want to go to one of these cities in particular, you should base your decision on the job offered and the employer's reputation rather than on the location. As far as everyday life is concerned, I really don't think there's that much to choose between Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar/Dahran. |

You left out the nature of the people. even saudis will tell you: citizens of riyadh are from all over saudi, citizens of jeddah are usually from jeddah. the moral: smaller coastal towns tend to be more down home than riyadh. people are generally nicer and more accomodating. for a foreign non-muslim in particular , it makes a world of difference. |

Do you mean they are more down to earth? I guess that's true of a lot of small towns.

Jeddah has a population of well over 3 million - it's hardly a small town!

Actually, most people say more or less the opposite: most Riyadhis are from the conservative Najdi heartlands, while Jeddah, being a port city and the gateway to Makkah, has a much more cosmopolitan population, including the descendants of hundreds of years of Hajj overstayers.
Anyway, my point is that the dichotomy between Riyadh, the (supposedly) dour mutawwa-city, and Jeddah, the (supposedly) free-wheelin' beach town, isn't as sharp as many people think, and that there are many advantages to living in the capital. |

Can I ask when you last visited Riyadh? Your information appears to be at least a decade out of date. |
