Hi all,

I've had a couple of interviews with some international schools in Thailand. The deals on the table seem pretty good. Does anyone have any idea about whether I would be able to pick up additional work tutoring elementary/primary students in subjects such as literacy or numeracy?

I can get around EUR30 an hour for it in Spain or the UK. In Thailand I would either be in Bangkok or Phuket.

Many thanks

You are not going to get anywhere near that here as a tutor, even if you were working at an international school. You'd be better off taking on some extra curricular activities within the school as opposed to doing off-premises tutoring.

The street rate for a Caucasian, (qualified) private tutor is b250-400 per hour (about the same as you would get for most extra curricular classes at school).

IF you are non-Caucasian then, regardless of your qualifications or position, you will get between b100-250 per hour.

To quickly translate that for you, 6-10 Euros per hour if you are white and 2.40-6 Euros per hour if you are non-white.

You are not going to get 30EUR per hour for anything here in the LOS. On the flip side, nothing (in the way of general living) will cost you anywhere near what it does in Spain or the UK either.

250-400/hour is what you should expect if you are UN-qualified teacher for tutoring jobs. As a certified (B.Ed, PGCE, licence) teacher, you should be able to get better than that. I would personally not even blink for less than 500 baht/hour. Just last month, was offered 700/hour to do 2 hours/week one on one. Due to location and limited hours, I passed. 2 months ago was offered 750/hour for a 2 month job in the evenings. 3 days ago, was offered 900/hour for a test prep gig. Might take that one. Most teachers I know who are "qualified" or rather certified, wouldn't work for 500 baht/hour either.

As you say you will be at an International School, I would guess that you will be quite busy and have limited time for tutoring work anyways. The better Int. schools expect a lot for the good salaries they offer (90K up). Expect extra curricular duties, heavy prep load, weekend PT interviews/meetings, etc. The wanna-be Int. schools (40-60K) will probably try to work you to the bone for sub-par wages. The mid-range places can go either way IMO (60-90K). These are just generalizations and certainly their will be a few exceptions to the norm.

Best of luck
