|
|
Hi,
I have a couple questions about possibly teaching in Shanghai.
1) I was told that it is illegal to teach english in shanghai without a TEFL/TESOL certification and at least 1 years experience in teaching (and a university degree). Is this true? I know it is not true for in-land cities, but could easily be true for places like Shanghai, where they have a ton of foreign teachers already.
I do not have a TEFL/TESOL and I do not have 1 year of teaching experience, BUT i do have a university degree, and did teach in china already, once, for 4 weeks during a summer. Do this mean I can't teach in Shanghai? Or does it mean that I can't work at a good school, and have to work at a private and/or shady school? Does this mean I can't get a Z-Visa?
2) Has anyone previously worked teaching english in shanghai and the company you worked for was great? Please let me know who you worked for.
3) Has anyone worked for someone horrible in shanghai, let me know too please.
4) any particular shanghai-specific advice to give me?
thank you,
duncan |

Who is the one who said this that it is illegal to work in Shanghai without a TEFL/TOSEL or even 1 year experience?
Here is a job example out of Shanghai.

right, i went back and dug up the original email i received, from longman schools:

Dear xxx:
You can teach in smaller cites in China, but all of the large cities governments require the experience in order to get the visa, so if you want to teach in China, just try submitting your job to some of the schools in those locations.. Tim

Dear Pearson Longman,
I am 25 years old, a native speaker of English and citizen of Canada, have a bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems, and will be completing a TEFL certification program this summer. I fulfill all the requirements posted by you and others online for becoming an English Teacher in Shanghai, save one. Every single posting I have seen requires 1 to 2 years of experience teaching. This appears to generate a sort of catch-22 issue, in that you can not teach if you do not have 1 year of experience, but you can not get 1 year of experience if you can not teach. I am wondering how "required" this is? Is it required by the City/Province? Is there a way around this requirement? If you do not fulfill this requirement are there are positions available that allow you to get this 1 year of experience?
Thank you for your time,
xxx |

A Bachelor's degree and TEFL certificate are standard requirements. But, this being China, "it's impossible, but there is a way." |

One or the other or both are good. But there is some FTs I know who have neither and they end up with good teaching jobs, their face is all the reference they need. But you know many schools are tweaking the requirements. |
