Hello All,

I just received a job offer from a private university in Istanbul. The job entails a mix of administrative work and teaching, though it's technically an academic position. Monthly salary is 3,500. If I accept the offer, what can I expect to pay in taxes?

Thanks!

Well, I'd be surprised if they quoted you a salary in gross; that's not the norm here... But if it does happen to be gross for some reason, tax seems to be roughly 30%. Or at least that's what I remember from a few years back (last time I was given a pay stub...). Can anyone verify/correct this?

That would leave you with like 2300 - a wage that's quite hard to believe for private universities here (at least for native speakers). That figure must be after taxes - you should look into that because that would make the difference between a pretty good salary and living on the poverty line.

Yes I agree with Coffeespoon man, double check but pretty sure that is your take-home pay.

Also make sure your employers give you a form which will ensure the government pay a small tax rebate every month. For single people it is around 50TL. Apparently, in the past people used to save up their receipts and submit them for a refund (I guess partial) on the KDV they had paid. Now this has been streamlined to mean that all workers receive a set amount. This goes up a little if you are married and more if you have children.
