Hello. I am a certified History teacher in Arizona. I have 4 years teaching experience in US public schools and a masters in education. What does anyone think about my prospects for employment in Japan? I know I am qualified to teach in the International schools, but that is very competitive and hard if you only focus on one country or region. So as far as EFL goes in Japan, I know things appear tough right now, but do my qualifications change the calculus at all for me? What kind of job situation would I likely find myself in? Still only entry level, subsistence existence? Thoughts? Thx in advance. |

The better jobs for someone in your situation are the international schools. With 4 years of teaching experience, do you really want to be an assistant teacher (ALT) or an eikaiwa instructor? Everyone has to start somewhere, but just trying to put things into perspective.
Besides, you can teach history in the international schools, not just English, which is what you can expect in other teaching situations. And, that means your prospects (calculus) remain the same as most people, I would think, if you want to get into EFL, considering your experience is not in teaching English. |
