I'm interested in teaching in China where having a cert like TESOL or CELTA seems to have little or no benefit in obtaining work. Because of this I'm hesitant to spend the money on a course, but would like to be a lot more knowledgeable regarding grammar. Can anyone recommend a text that was helpful to them in this regard? |

Don't discount the value of a certificate. CELTA introduces you to teaching methods and methodology and lesson planning. For me, the practice teaching was enough for the value of the course!
That said, check these out:
Scrivener's Learning Teaching
For grammar I always go to two books:
Swan's Practical English Usage and Azar's Understanding and Using English Grammar. |

I second Swan's Practical English Usage. I found it difficult to read at first since it is so detailed and I had little grammatical knowledge whilst doing my CELTA, but now that I have got my head round it, I find it really useful. |
