|
|
Hello, I'm a 21 year old ESL teacher in China, and there was a problem with my visa, so I've got to leave the country by Sept. 10th. I have a brother in Thailand studying in a temple and I was considering getting a ticket there, because I don't have enough money to go back to America.
I'm wondering if I would even be able to land a teaching job in Thailand. I have several years experience teaching, and I have a TESOL, but I don't have a BA. I have to act fast (I have just about a week), but I don't know which would be the best country to go to get a teaching job without a degree. I really would like to stay in Asia, and I guess I don't have much choice considering my finances. I have about 5000 rmb, so that's just enough to get a ticket somewhere and get set up teaching. Any advice would be hugely appreciated!
Thanks! |

You might want to post this in the Thailand thread. This 'General Asia Forum' is for those countries not deserving of a separate forum. So, you will mostly see posts for Malaysia, Brunei and Mongolia here. |

could you find legal work = doubtful (immigration issue).
It may be possible to find work as a teacher in some of the outlying provinces and get a work visa/work permit with just a TESOL but again, you will be hard pressed to earn enough to actually save enough money to buy your way home. Without the ability to get a teachers license you will have a maximum stay in the kingdom of 2 years.
could you find some work = yes
Will you make enough to buy a ticket home = unlikely unless you live like a monk. Most people (who are in fact legal) have a hard time living in the city (BKK) on full time entry level wages (30k baht) and often have to take other part-time weekend work or supplement their incomes from previous savings.
BUT
since you won't be getting a work visa (non-immigrant "B") with your work permit you will be limited to a 30 day stay, 7 day extension (1900baht), then a visa run to the border and back for another 15 days.
If you get a double entry tourist visa before you come to Thailand (instead of just a 30 day stamp on arrival) before you come you will get 60 days (with a possible 30 day extension (1900 baht), border run and repeat. This will give you a possible 6 months before you are required to leave (and stay out for 3-6 months).
Do be aware that working like this does have it's risks.
Work is inconsistent at best and you will be hard pressed to make ends meet.
If you get caught violating immigration laws (working on a tourist visa) you will see the inside of a Thai prison.
If you get an unscrupulous employer you will have NO PROTECTION or ability to collect your unpaid wages.
I can't speak with any authority in regards to Cambodia or Laos in this regard but you can also wipe Vietnam off your list for the same reasons.
IF you can get back to the Americas there is (legal) work in Mexico and central America for you but again, you won't be saving anything.

Go to the Japan board and/or Korea forums. I don't think a degree is required for some jobs in those countries.
tttompatz has a point about Thailand. It won't be legal work here. |

Verified degree is required for Korea.
Degree is not required (for the visa) in Japan IF he has 3 or more years of verifiable classroom experience. Still be darned hard to find a job without one.

Why don't you have your degree? Not all bachelor's degrees are "BA" (bachelor of arts) degrees.
One of the members here has a running advertisement for Cambodia at the bottom of his pages whenever he posts. |

Actually, you only need an Associates Degree to work in some public schools in some parts of Korea, but I assume the OP doesn't have one of these either..... |

He won't be getting into the TaLK program (the only one for anyone who does not have a degree) in an ASAP situation.
For all other cases a verified (K-embassy certified and/or with home country apostille affixed) degree are required.
