|
|
After teaching in Vietnam for 14 months I am looking at moving on to teaching in Syria. As I say I have about 14 months experience teaching adults and children, and a TEFL but no degree. Will I be able to find work in Syria without a degree?
Also, is there much informal work there? In Vietnam most of the work is in private, local english schools which actually (technically) operate illegally. Is there much of this type of work in Syria? I would prefer this than long contracts with universitys
Thanks for your help! |

There will be little work for someone with few credentials, and it won't provide you with a work visa. Thus you will be doing repeated visa runs... likely to Lebanon. I suspect that you may not be able to support yourself as you can in some countries in Asia. Making visa runs can get expensive...

Try SABIS in Homs, they are the most vile organization in the wordl, BUT they will employ anyone, degree or no degree, they will never get u papers but will pay for the visa run to Lebanon, the kids are nasty little shits but the school pays on time, but watch the summer pay, they will default if you don't get it in cash. |

Kinda reminds me of the comment made during 'Nam:
"We had to destroy the villiage in order to save it"...

But in general will there be much work for a non-degree holder? Don't mind border runs (work permits in vietnam are impossible to get so have been doing visa runs entire time here), just as long as there will actually be work here. |

cmann did say that Sabis will hire without the degrees... they are usually pretty desperate since anyone with good credentials knows to avoid them. Homs is not the most exciting place to live, but there is good (and very nice) bus service around the countryside connecting the major towns. If they will cover visa runs that should make it financially doable. You could always apply and see what kind of a response you get.

So will I be able to find work if I just turn up, or is it best to have a job pre-arranged for visas etc? I think I would like to stay in Damascas... |
