My cousin/best friend has gotten himself into a financial disaster and has just been laid off from his job. He's still at least two years away from his bachelor's and he doesn't have the money to finish his degree anyway. His work experience is in air conditioning which is laying off people left and right, and he is basically screwed in every way possible. I am currently teaching English in Korea and wouldn't mind doing another year in another country mainly to save money and help my cousin out at the same time. Obviously Korea is the best for saving money but it also requires a degree, so it's out of the question.
Any suggestions? It doesn't even have to be an Asian country, from the research I have done anything outside of Asia doesn't pay very well though. |

2 years away - as in he has an associate degree? The TaLK program in Korea is his only hope of decent pay without a degree.
EVERYWHERE else that does NOT require a degree, by and large, PAYS PEANUTS for non degree holders.
If he was looking to use EFL to extend a vacation, then that is one thing but as a financial bailout without having the credentials to back it up is virtually hopeless.
BEST BET, and it would be treading water at best, would be to get a TEFL cert and head for northern or western China. There are still some provinces that allow native speakers to teach with just a TEFL and no degree AND they pay enough to live on (3000-4000 RMB per month) but there won't be anything in the way of savings.
Your friend will still need some start-up money (airfare, visa expenses, living expenses for his first month).

Actually I don't even think that he has his AA yet, but I think he is close to getting it. I also just remembered that he has a criminal record until February, when his "crime" of being at a strip club that was raided for prostitution is removed from his record. Looks like the TaLK program starts in February meaning he would still have a criminal record anyway when they do the CBC 1-2 months prior to the start date. Thanks for the info. |

Actually, his 'record' will not automatically disappear. He will need to go through the process of getting it expunged. |

I don't know the details of it. That's just what he told me. |
