My contract is up 22 Oct here in Korea. That's just about the beginning of Malaysian hiring season for Jan. 2011. After a brief and much-needed vacation from Borg Life here, it will be Nov. 7 or so, and time to hit the pavement with resume and cellphone in hand in KL. No time to have earned a certification before that.

I called IH and one other place in KL and found they require a CELTA in order to teach with them. So, WILL I BE RESTRICTED TO MOSTLY SCRUB CRAM SCHOOLS without that cert.? I just did 2 years+1 month in a hagwon with unruly little brats, and am not planning on repeating the experience. Am I doomed to the same bush-league hell without that cert. in Malaysia?

If I am so doomed, would it be wiser to SKIP THE HIRING SEASON this time around, and go get the CELTA, and come back for the May hiring season?

Personally, I would suggest take the time on the beach (or a mountain if you are that way inclined), unwind, then hit your CELTA with fresh eyes and attitude and THEN hit the bricks looking for work in the spring term.

There is no shortage of jobs for those with a degree and a CELTA (anywhere in SE Asia) and the savings at the end of the month are often similar to what you had in Korea with less stress.

Even 6 months on the beach is not that expensive; $1000 for rent and utilities and about the same for groceries unless you are a party animal. 3 million won goes a long way.

1000 bucks for the whole 6 mos.??? or PER month? Please tell me where so we can go a.s.a.p. I checked some Cherating/Kuantan hotels and all were $50-100 US PER NIGHT. That makes it look like $1000 per month.

Please PM me with some suggestions for the places you are referring to. I have been researching and cannot get any better than the above-mentioned rates.

Long stays are different from short stays.

Short stays in hotels and guest houses with restaurants 3x per day will run you the same as any other tourist; about $100 per day.

LONG stays (as in rent a studio or 1-bedroom apartment - outside of the central city) run about $100 per month (or less) for rent, $50 for utilities (electric and cooking gas) and about $100 for groceries.

As a specific example, I am in Thailand, do NOT live in BKK (about 90km west).
Rent in our town - for a 2 bedroom townhouse - is about b4000 per month (with air). Without air it is about b3500 per month (plus utilities).

A furnished studio with air (about 500 meters from our place) is b3000 per month + another ~b2000 for electric, water, cable TV and internet (wireless).
(~5000 baht per month (190k won per month)).

Meat (at Tesco) runs about b65-85-100 per kilogram (krw 2400-3700) chicken / pork / beef). FRESH veggies are cheap at the open market.

You can get comparable pricing in Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.
(Singapore is the exception - it is expensive compared to everywhere else).

If you just need some downtime, rest, recover, then do your CELTA, it is NOT expensive (unless you make it that way) to live in SE Asia.

Can you blow through $100 per day = yes, especially in the cities or if you like to party hardy or chase the ladies.

Can you live comfortably on $400-500 per month (without missing out on too many creature comforts) = yes.

Yes, I know a couple of places that charge only RM70 per night (US$23) and are in the middle of Kuantan. For a longer term stay, you should be able to bargain them down. These are not hotels, but apartments and close to public transport, restaurants, laundry, and food stores. Also, I know of a large bungalow house that rents rooms out for about US$130 per month, but the owners are very picky about who they rent to. I have a relative staying there and she had to sign a sheet promising to be clean, not make noise, and etc. But the place is in a GREAT location!

I like tttompatz's idea, but still think that you could find work and do the CELTA in KL at the same time.

Firstly, what is all this crap about the hiring season?

You will most probably be working at a language school, even with a celta, and a lot of students in these language schools are spoilt, rich, brats. These schools hire year round.

Go to KL, find a job, do the celta part time over six months, get a better job and move to a better city.

Well that is certainly put into a nutshell. Sounds doable, too. So it seems you're saying I can get a job, crappy tho it may be, WITHOUT the initial CELTA. Perhaps they'll be more inclined to hire me if I can prove I am enrolled and/or already doing the CELTA. God knows what I'll get without the cert.

Kayu, could you PM me with some of those 70 ringgit gigs' info? Sounds fantastic. tomppatz I like that 1 too but dont wanna wait til next summer hiring season, tho wailingimam says there really arent any hiring seasons, but that most likely I'll be in the rolling admissions monthly kind of language school schedule yearround ...... though I'd sure prefer a uni or college thing with more mature students.
