One challenge for newcomers to VN, and specifically HCMC, is how to locate some common items that we take for granted back in our home countries. It seems that stores that specialize in certain products tend to be clustered in a specific area of the city, and unless you are well connected, you can spend hours searching for that elusive item. I thought that it might be worthwhile to post a general thread for this kind of discussion.
Currently, I am engaged in a search for replacement brushes for my Braun Oral-B electric toothbrush. I love that bad boy and would hate to have to go back to manual. I have been to several of the larger electronic outlets, but no electric toothbrushes in sight. Any chance at a pharmacy or some other type of outlet? |

Have you tried the Metro supermarket? I go to the one off route 1 on the way to Thu Duc. Also, you might want to try asking one of the modern dentist offices in d1. |

This is where foursquare could be cool here. It's an app for smartphones that connects people by location so they can share such info in real-time. "Hey, Goody's just got in 3 cases of real turnip greens!" sort of thing. I've hesitated to use it because it looks kind of gimmicky (as opposed to practical).
Post back about that metro superstore -- your luck with this in particular, and what else they may have, yea? |

Where can I find a decent selection of rooms and studios available for living in at reasonable prices that aren't extortionate in HCMC? |

Seen Braun replacement heads lots of places. The "Medicare" pharmacy chain, I think in various supermarkets too.
CThomas, what and where is "Goody's"? Never heard of it.
Since the other thread is for some strange reason locked, I will point out that you can very possibly find stuff like Clamato at two shops next door to each other on Ham Nghi St. in District 1, near the big Nhu Lan delicatessen/restaurant, that specialize in imported westerner food. These are also great shops to get freshly baked whole grain bread, although some of it is just half-wholegrain mixed with white flour. Nearby there's also a shop that has imported New Zealand butter in bulk packs for a lot cheaper than in the supermarkets.
About a 15 minute walk from Ben Thanh market. |

There are tons of such places in the backpacker area unless you consider $10/nite incl. A/C and wi-fi to be extortionate. |
