I just would like to get any helpful information that I can...I would be working in the area of Shenzen and would like any info about that area that I could get. I am concerned about hopefully being able to save some money but also be able to enjoy/experience living overseas...Really I will take any advice that anyone is willing to share....

Thanks,
Kelli

Welcome. You'll love it here. Just don't sweat the small stuff, and keep a sense of humour.

Shenzhen is not really the 'authentic Chinese experience', but offers a 'soft landing' for newbies.
It's modern
Its close to Hong Kong
There are loads of foreigners
Even the Chinese are from elsewhere. Everybody is new to Shenzhen.

Congratulations. Have a great time.

Kelli,

Re-post your initial query to the two China fora - you'll get far more replies ,there, than on this forum. Also, use Dave's search facility to look up previous postings re life in Shenzhen.

As Blingcosa says, it's a "soft landing" for Newbies, but it's definitely not an "authentic Chinese experience".

If you haven't already accepted a job in Shenzhen, search for jobs in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Suzhou and Nanjing. Those places might also be seen as "soft landings" for newbies, but have a bit more "genuine Chinese feel" about them than Shenzhen .

Also, be aware that the cost of living in Shenzhen is considerably higher than in most other cities in China.

Apart from being close to HK, Shenzhen is a short ferry trip from Macau - far more interesting than HK !

Good luck !

Peter

Thanks...I appreciate it. I will repost to the other forums. I had actually thought about trying to go to another location if possible. I am just not sure if I can...the company had multiple locations and I told them I was open to anything...so we will see....
