Dear Chailocks,

I found this on Yahoo Answers:

"ok, the easiest way to find a violin is to visit a couple of stores and showrooms that sell musical instruments. there's Al-Dawliah, yamaha and my personal favorite Rajab & Silsilah. for the first two, i would suggest a quick visit to Jeddah International Souq just off Tahlia St. (it's one of jeddahs oldest malls so anyone could take you there in no time) shouldn't cost more than 20 - 25 riyals by taxi. great mall for buying cameras as well. for Rajab & Silsilah, go to their Company Building and showroom on Palestine Street (this could be quite a stressful long ride from the red sea mall area (i know i lived there) i'm not sure how much would this cost but the place is good and might be worth it if you didn't find what you're looking for...just email them or better yet give them a call before you drive down there:
Tel : +966 2 661 0006 e-mail : [email protected]
i remember a small whole in the wall store in Daniah center on Hera'a st. that sold the arabian Oud but i can't remember if they sold any other string instrument.
of course you could try the historical district but you would really need a local that knows the hidden gems there. good luck."

Hope this helps.

Regards,
John

Music banned ? Maybe in the delusional fevered brains of the really way-out mutawa'een, but not in the real world of modern KSA.

Do you think, though, if we asked really nice, they could ban rap, country and western, and ANYTHING by Justin Bieber?

John

Of course one of the great centres for Arabic music was Baghdad. Did you ever listen to the music of Nazim Ghazali ?

Cellos are pretty exotic in KSA though and you might be better to bring your own.

If playing a musical instrument is important to you, I certainly would not recommend you rely on buying it in KSA, as the selection will be limited as best. Either bring your cello with you or have it sent by courier.

Jeddah International Market
Coral Mall
Jamjoom Center

Those 3 malls have musical instrument stores, among others. But you are better off bringing your own as the selection will be limited and I am not even sure if they have cellos here.

What does it mean to say "music is prohibited in SA"? Listening to it? Selling it? Making it?

Anyway, regardless of what it means, the existence of even one record store, anywhere in SA would make that statement patently false.

And so, that statement is completely false. Aside from the fact that Virgin has a branch here (or more than one), music can't be prohibited, officially or otherwise, if you can hear Britney Spears playing in some restaurants.

I understand music is kind of officially prohibited in S.A., but I've read music stores do exist there. Can anyone recommend a musical instrument store selling string instruments in Jeddah?

Also, would they confiscate a cello arriving at the airport?

Well, I suggest you buy a Bamboo cane and learn how to dance the Mizmar or the 'sword dance' under the rhythm of drums and modern Arabian Oud. Laughing

You may ask Uncle Scott to show you how to dance shoulder to shoulder carrying the sword and using the Mizmar! Laughing

A good place to learn about the sword dancing is the Jenadriyah festival in Riyadh.

Couldnt you find a smaller instrument to bring over to the KSA? Maybe a ukulele?

Ok. Sorry. My bad. I play the classical organ it's bigger than the one in J.S. Bachs' Cathedral. Maybe I'll bring it with me this time. We could get together and jam sometime. I like playing the cover song to Darth Vaders entrance in Star Wars. It just sounds so dark side on it.

Regards.
