Has anyone used these books and tapes? I have been given them to use as the basis of a 1st year university Speaking and Listening class. I find them boring and irritating. Have you been able to do interesting sessions with them, and still finished the material by the end of semester? I find if I try to make it interesting, that I don't finish the unit in one session.

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

I've used them before as part of our curriculum. They're good for teaching the finer points of the grammar, with lots of examples. But if you know the students already know that part pretty well, then try to use the same with their own lives. Find a way to relate the material to them. We don't use SBS 1, but we use 2-4.

Yes, I know them, pretty old stuff, been in use for maybe ten years by now.
Don't take it too seriously. You can vary the topics a bit. The most interesting for the students is when you play the tape, I guess; what you do for the rest of the period is another matter; I did dictations, and my students liked my dicatations a lot better.
