Mexico celebrates 200 years of independence this year and there are numerous events schedule for what should be one hell of a party.
What's going on where you are?
I'm still debating on whether to go to the Mexico City Zocalo or not for festivities. It's wild every year but this one might be too much, and I think it would be too much for the 15 month old daughter.
Events start this Sunday at the angel of independence.

Dolores might be an exciting place to be. That's where Father Hidalgo read the Grito on September 16, 1810 - the Mexican equivalent of the U.S.'s "shot heard around the world." That event is reenacted annually by the president of Mexico as well as the mayors of many (most?) towns, and I've heard that for the bicentennial, the president will travel to Dolores to do the reenactment. I can't remember whether I heard that from a reliable source, though, so check it out for yourself if that kind of thing interests you.
(I realize that you probably know all that, Guy, but I figure other people might be reading the post, so I overexplained.) |

Nice...I got to tour the Cuauhtemoc some years ago when it was docked at Acapulco. There's something special about sailing ships... |

I wish it were next month when school is out, we'd load up the car and head up there to see them. |

You can get in the spirit by grocery shopping. I notice that about 70% of the music played in the supermarkets now is from the revolutionary era. I predict the percentage will climb as we approach the day itself. Very catchy music, whether you like it or not. |

The Soriana nearest me is the same...very decked out in green, white, and red, and all the music to go with it.
The vendors selling giant flags and noisemakers have been out on the streets for a few weeks now already. |

I am in Pachuca and they are building giant statues up and down the main hwy through town. What was a giant median filled with grass and garbage two weeks ago, is now beautifully landscaped and filled with giant monuments. They have been working day and night, it is really amazing! Posters all over town boast big events in the centro as well as at several new monuments. Should be something to see!
I think I will buy a hat and some clappy hands from those vendors selling all things Mexico! |
