Hi,

Just a quick question. Is not speaking Spanish a major problem when applying for jobs. Had an interview for a job in Oveido and it seemed to go Ok until we said our Spanish was basic. The guy said he likes to take his time
when making a decision he employ staff. That was two weeks ago ! It really means I have not got the guts to say you have not got the job. Rant over!!
People !!

Thanks. Smile

Depends on the job and your qualifications. Normally, no. I've been offered plenty of jobs without Spanish and a basic qualification (TEFL certificate). Only been refused one job because of it. Normal academies accept it.

What are your circumstances?

Usually no, though obviously it is an advantage, especially if they want you to work with kids.

I'd say it's more likely that when he said it, he had other candidates to interview and one of them met his requirements more than you did. Lack of Spanish may have been one of those requirements, but it could have been any number of things, overqualified, too much experience, salary expectations, he didn't like your face... plenty more jobs out there and if you keep plugging away I doubt you'll have a problem finding one. Good luck.

It won't really affect your work sitiuation, apart from, as Jonny says, private kid students as you need to talk to their parents and often they themselves don't speak good English.

The main thing is that you will get a lot more out of your stay here if you speak Spanish, for example at bars and parties.

Also, if it's your first time learning a new language, it will improve you hugely as a teacher, because you will have gone through everything your students are going through.
