I am considering moving to Thailand and would like to know how well I should expect to do with only a TELF certification.

I am considering attending the four week TEFL program at Chiang Mai Uni. on campus.

What types of jobs should I expect with this type of certification and no degree?

I am 29, and would be coming from America.

Thank you!

Nothing legal (with non-immi "B" visa and work permit).

You will be able to find part-time stuff and possibly work at one of the less reputable language institutes by getting a dual entry (60 day) visa and doing visa runs to extend your stay.

Another option would be to try to get a student visa by being enrolled in Thai language studies and working part time. You won't get rich and won't be on the beach but you will be in Thailand.

For legal work = yes.

Check the immigration website:
http://www.mfa.go.th/web/2482.php?id=2492

2.4 Non-Immigrant Visa Category B (Teaching) Foreigners who intend to take up employment as school teachers at the levels below university level in Thailand must submit the following required documents:

- Completed visa application form
- Recent passport-sized photograph (4 x 6 cm) of the applicant taken within the past 6 months.
- Letter of acceptance from employing institute or school in Thailand.
- Letter of approval from government agencies such as the Office of the Private Education Commission, the Office of the Basic Education Commission.
- Evidence of educational qualification such as diplomas or teaching certificates.

- School license or business registration, list of shareholders and school profile.
- Applicants resume.
- Police certificate verifying that applicant has no criminal record or equivalents or letter issued by authorised agencies in applicants country. (The requirement of the submission of such police certificate is optional. The applicant must submit it if consular officer requests he/she to do so. This requirement is effective as from May 2007)

My advice to you is to take a few years off, get a real degree and then come and teach. Without a legitimate degree even if you can find work you'll be lowballed for the rest of your "career". A TEFL certificate is a piece of garbage and will never replace collegiate academia or solid work experience.

A degree is not mandatory for legal work. The rules relating to the requirements for a Non Imm B do not specify a degree.

A Work Permit is required to be able to WORK legally and the Dept of Labour do not specify a degree is mandatory either.

A WP can also be obtained if on a Non Imm O visa.

The Nonthaburi project in Bangkok (assisted by Chulalongkorn University) also is able to obtain WP's even for non-degree holders.

A more Thailand appropriate statement would be that it depends on which labour office you apply, which school you are at, and who they know. The vast majority of legal work is and will be obtained by degree holders.

Try China or Indonesia if you dont have a degree.

BTW, Non-IMM B Visa is irrelevant if discussing "legal work" as it is the Work Permit given by the Labour Office that is required to "work legally". A Visa allows you to be in the country. In many cases, the Ministry of Ed has their fingers in the pot as well.

Working without a Work Permit will put you at the mercy of your "employer" and you will have very little legal recourse if treated unfairly (no pay, late pay, not honoring "contract", dismissed without notice, etc)

Best advice is to either get your degree (please no fakes) or go to a country where it is not an issue. Thailand is a better place to visit than it is to work anyways.

Best of luck

The CELTA is of course quite well regarded and is recognised world-wide.

The next logical step would be for the DELTA. Now this is highly regarded and depending on the MEd program (for the future) can give a good amount of credits towards that MEd.
