"They" ? Who exactly ?

No one will issue you with an abaya on arrival. Just dress modestly and get one ASAP after arrival.
Stop worrying.

These two girls told me that if I show up in S.A. with no abaya, they will give me one at the airport. Is this true?

I'm asking the same question as scot: who is 'they'?

It's possible that your employers may bring an abaya for you when they come to pick you up at the airport (though this seems like an obvious thing to do, I've never heard of an employer who actually does it). However, the airport staff certainly are not in the business of handing out abayas to foreign women.

Just dress in a long loose skirt or light jacket for the flight over, and make your way to the nearest suk to get any sort of abaya to tide you over for the first few weeks. You can then get advice from colleagues or students about where to pick up a more 'fashionable' abaya, should you so desire.

No one working at the airport will give you one. If your employer brings one, I wouldn't know about it.

My wife always flies in to Jeddah without one, and it is no problem. Just dress modestly (full length trousers with a long full sleeve shirt or a short dress, to cover the behind) and you can go through.

Abaya shops are in every mall and souq here, and there is one mall per citizen here, so there is no shortage.
