|
|
Hello All,
I am an American who looks east Asian wishing to teach in the Middle East. I look genetically Korean. I have had several solid job offers and one scam sent to me from the Middle East and I would like to know if there is severe discrimination against East Asians as far as getting a job or living in Saudi Arabia/Oman/UAE. I have heard that the Saudi people are very conservative and do not treat such foreigners that well but can you give specific examples? I am an experienced science (5 years public in NYC) and ESL teacher (5 years private in Korea) with a Chemistry 7-12 license trying to grab a science or ESL position there.
Best, |

The closest I'll come to this is by letting you read this little back and forth...

Mr Brown obviously had a chip on his shoulder and when his suspicions were confirmed, opted to lash out at those who confirmed them.
He hadda South East Asian passport and, purportedly looked Arab, but that really doesn't matter. Others, like Cleo have had different experiences (which I think are in the vast minority), but the only "Asians" I ever knew who had a decent work experience were the ones I worked with on defense contracts.
If I were you, I'd get state certified (if'n yer not already) and try for a "real" international school job.

Cleo is most decidedly not "East Asian" - or any other kind of Asian. |

As for the Saudis and other Gulf Nationals, they will treat you like a Filipino. |

Well, genetically speaking, how you look (from outsiders) has nothing to do with your genetics!
Well, I think in the Magic Kingdom, unlike Japan, they (Magic Kingdom) are not racist towards Koreans and they do not view them as violent or stupid, and do not employ them only in the dirtiest lowest paying jobs!
The treatment of the Magic Kingdom to you will be nothing compared to the Japanese Imperial Period of Korea!
BTW, are you an Gaegogi fun? |

Chemistry 7-12 license |
Get a job in one of the American or British schools in Saudi, teaching science/Chemistry to secondary school students.
There is too much nastiness and politics in EFL teaching in Saudi (just read the boards), not in all universities/institutions, but definitely in most.
In a Western-managed school you would be safer, in the vast majority of them.
There are 3 in Jeddah, 2 in Riyadh, and 3 or 4 in Khobar/Dhahran. |

Would you guys classify a Turk as Asian, or European? Turkey lies in two continents... |

Seems I'm not the only one who hasn't the remotest idea what you're going on about. |

He may be alluding to the fact that you are not totally negative about KSA. Mind you he is only an EFL teacher. We should not expect an ability to communicate in written Modern Standard English from such lowly mortals. |

Yes, but I think that it's the most recent history of such questions...and...that why the link was included...
