Hi,
I don't know about anyone else but it seems like it is harder than usual
this year to find an ESL position in Oman.
Is the job market very competitive this year due to the
poor American economy or am I the only one facing this problem ?
All I can say is that constantly researching for jobs every day in front of
my computer ends up giving me quite a headache.
Argh ! |

Well... this is not the time to be looking for a job. The semester is starting now. Peak hiring season is normally March and maybe into July for the slower ones. Then there has been a problem with the Ministry not approving teachers this year - perhaps related to Ramadhan timing, so many teachers gave up on them and moved on.
Also the Ministry is supposedly starting to enforce qualification minimums.

Yes..I guess now is not the right time to apply although sometimes i have been able to obtain a position around January.
Didn't know they were getting stricter about minimum qualifications. Thanks. |

You will notice that the ads now say, BA+cert+3 years experience as the minimum. Supposedly this is being enforced now whereas for the first few years, these recruiters were hiring any warm body. The Ministry forced out quite a few teachers without the above a year or so ago.
Current teachers on the ground will have to tell us how strictly they are enforcing it.
Yes, many places hire for second semester, but it is too early for them to be advertising as they don't really know what they need yet. Some colleges are not even starting classes until early October. I don't know what this means for the start of the second semester.

There is also increasing pressure to recruit Omani staff this year - the Ministry of Higher Education is looking at ratios in all colleges. |

Thanks. Didn't know about that either.
Been reading other posts on here and it seems like other people are also having trouble getting jobs in Oman with all the hiring confusion ? |
