I'm an American, I've been in Japan for a year and a half. I miss hockey. The season is about to start. Is there anywhere in Tokyo or Yokohama that might actually show a hockey game? I've heard from some British co-workers about places that English soccer league games and even rugby. How about American sports? Thanks. |

This is topical. This is what I'm considering right now:
NHL GameCenter Live
Up to 40 games per week, HD if your internet connection can handle it, DVR, archived games, able to watch the home or away broadcast, no games are blacked out (for those of us not living in the US or Canada anyways) including ALL of the playoffs. All that for $160 for the season and there is also a PS3 app coming (you will have to purchase the app-I'm guessing maybe $5.99 or $9.99) so you can stream right onto your television.
I sent a list of queries to their support site and they replied extremely promptly. The questions arent included but you can probably guess them from the answers:

Hello Brendan,
Your request about Other has been received on 09/22/2010 10:58 PM.
1) International availability is "limited" in that there are regions where the service is restricted, namely Europe and the Middle East.
2) There are no blackouts in Japan.
3) Video is available at various bitrates, the higher the bitrate the higher the picture quality. The bitrates that will be offered this season are 400, 800, 1600, 2200, and 3000 kbps. 720p-equivalent resolution is available at 2400 or 3000 kbps, provided your system and internet bandwidth can support those bitrates.

Hello Brendan,
Your request about Other has been received on 09/24/2010 06:49 AM.
1) The site has a built-in DVR feature, which allows you to start any game over for a full 24 hours after the start of the live game.
2) Playoff games are subject to the same blackout restrictions as regular season games, which in Japan means no blackouts.
3) There will be an app in the Playstation Network Store starting October 7th which will allow you to link your existing GameCenter Live subscription for the computer to your game console.

Hope this helps. $160 is a chunk of change but in my opinion that would be worth it just for the ability to watch all of the playoff games. Plus think of all the money you'll save from not having to purchase overpriced beer and food at the bars (if they even played hockey which I doubt) |

I'm perfectly confident about the quality. The question is, are you perfectly confident about your internet connection?
There are other options of course. There's a website called Hockey Streams that has a deluxe package with all the games (some in HD) for $99. Of course they are less than legit so you have to take all that comes with that. And of course if you don't mind being patient there is always the torrent option after waiting for someone to upload the games. I won't post any links to torrent sites here but if you were to google NHL torrents and select the first UK website that comes up in the list you would probably be well on your way |

It looks like it's going to take me 15 min to download the latest Leafs game (getting 3.3MB/s) so I might just stick with the torrenting assuming that it gets uploaded soon enough. |

Used it last year for the playoffs, was great! The only disadvantage I can think of is you can't choose which feed to watch of the game (whether home or away). Other than that, its awesome.
The new PS3 app sounds awesome! |

This year you can choose home or away feeds! I think I may spend the $160 because the torrents just don't get uploaded fast enough. If there is a game on in the morning then I want to be able to watch it when I get home at night-not wait until the next day. It's too easy to get spoilered. |

Happily signing for another year of NHL Gamecenter Live so that I can watch my Kings
I find the video quality to be better than that of MLB.TV. |

Just thought I would let you know that you can download the games for free from:
http://www.nhltorrents.co.uk/
Its a free torrent site. You will have to sign up for it. I used this all last season and it was fantastic. You can download almost all of the games about a day or two after they have happened. You can also download the games in SD or HD. However, make sure you keep your seeding rate high cause they have a minimum limit. |

I posted that previously but I didn't link any urls because it might violate the terms of this forum. My problem with torrents is that they don't upload the games quickly enough for my liking. |

Nah, that works out to less than two bucks per game if you only watch your favorite team for the entire season. That's a pretty sweet deal for reliable HD feeds on demand.
Compare that to the official NFL streaming package, which works out to something like $15/game. Insane!! |

Hoser,
Thanks for that, man! I just ordered it and am now watching last year's SC games from the vault.
The Quality is amazing. My internet connection speed is 160Mbps, so you would expect that. Don't know how it would play on slower connections, but I am totally happy with this.
Again, thanks for the info... May be the most useful I've ever found on Dave's... |
