Jes' the way the Prophet (PBUH) envisioned it... Rolling Eyes

Not so much a Hajj, but a commute...

The second phase of the project will link Mashair Railway with the Grand Mosque in Makkah with a station on Umm Al-Qura Road. It will also be linked with the Haramain Railway that connects Makkah with Madinah and Jeddah.

I didn't know there is a rail connection between Makkah and Jeddah...?

There will be separate carriages for women... so how is that going to work for families? With millions of people in one place, will the men be able to find their womenfolk upon disembarking?

And I wonder how clean (and clean/neutral-smelling) they will stay after a few uses....

I didn't catch this the first time:

Quote:
JEDDAH: The newly established Mashair Railway, which links the holy sites of Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifa with Makkah, will have a 30-day test run before opening to transport domestic and GCC pilgrims during the upcoming Haj season.

Dear trap,

Non-Gulf pilgrims are not well-trained enough. Very Happy

Non-Gulf pilgrims all come in organized tours. They don't get a visa otherwise. So their bus is already paid for, and you would hardly want them getting lost in a country they don't speak the language anyway.

Building railway lines is one thing; maintaining them is another. That means more jobs for western managers and laborers from other places. Lacking either, the trains will run into the ground like a four-year-old Corolla in Riyadh.

The Dammam-Riyadh service has been running for more than 50 years. I can assure SnB that it is a perfectly good train service ! I recommend it to anyone !

Quite impressive how long a Toyota will last without ever having an oil change or any other maintenance. Cool

That makes sense. How about Muslim TEFLers who work in Saudi? Will they be allowed to get into the metro despite having a non-Gulf background? They don't need to get a visa anyway, they have an iqama.

Sure, dutchman, the Muslim TEFLers and other Muslim residents of the Magic Kingdom will be allowed to use this train, they are part of the domestic pilgrims. And remember that during Hajj period, all men pilgrims wear simple white garments, called ihram, and it will be very difficult to distinguish between a Saudi national, a GCC national, or a foreigner from other countries. The train will be packed with all nationalities from all over the world, and it will be difficult for the Saudi authorities to control the flow of hundreds of thousands of people, and as usual, always the elderly who will suffer during the embarkment of the train!
I do think the rule of 80% standing and 20% will be seated, as reported in the article, will be very difficult to maintain during Hajj!
