Hi all,

The situation: I'm an experienced teacher who landed early this month. I have hours to cover basic expenses through a school, but I'm particularly keen to fill the rest of my schedule either teaching online or even by phone (kind of pushing myself into less conventional milieus).

What I've encountered is kind of a stone wall until I have my NIE.

To be clear, I know about the appointment system which takes months. What I'm looking for is a faster to get an NIE.

Reading about NIE procedures on the net is like reading Greek mythology, and I've become quite confused as to what my options are, if any.

I've read that a Hacienda can give you a provisional one, but the hacienda near my house told me to go to the police (traditional method).

It's not clear to me, but I've read that you can wait for your interview OR show up early at the National Police (like at 4am) to be in line to register that day (provided you have a bank payment receipt). I'd be willing to try that, as I have time on my hands, but others are telling me this is a myth referring back to previous procedures.

I'd also be willing to part with like 50 euros to have an agency get me through this ordeal (not 165, as I've seen advertised).

So, to break that down, my questions are:

1) What is the best way to expedite the NIE process?
Note: some have recommended a service via hellomadrid.com, but I have yet to find a proper link

2) Can a hacienda (tax office), in fact provide you with a provisional number? If so, is it only at a central hacienda or any?

3) Is camping out the National Police office a viable way to avoid the wait for an interview?

Thank you to any and all,
HD

Not sure what the problem is. The NIE is totally different from the social security number. You'll be issued the latter along with any legal work contract. The NIE you have to get within 12 months of arriving in the country but you can work in the meantime without it. I was working legally for about 6 months before I got around to getting mine.
