Hi everyone,

I have applied to some universities and colleges throughout September to start at the beginning of the second semester (February,2011). I haven't heard back from any yet regarding my application. How long do you think I will need to wait until (if at all) I hear back from them? I don't have any experience in the Middle East but have 3 degrees including an M.Ed., and have experience teaching English in Asian universities. Oh, I'm a Canadian. So, I meet their basic requirments.

Thanks so much

That's a given, mate...

They'll get back when they're good and ready...if even then. And, hold for it, IF they do get back and you engage in an exchange, it would be more typical than not that the exchange would suddenly, inexplicably stop somewhere in the process from their end necessitating another thread on this board...

The reality is that most places are very busy getting the first semester running. The last thing that they are thinking about if hires for second semester. Don't be surprised if you don't hear from any of them for another month... or two...

And then NCTBA's message takes effect. Getting the first job in the Middle East is rarely easy. Doing it for second semester is even more difficult. I'd spread my applications around the Gulf universities, not just Saudi.

It could be any time - or never. This process will sensitize you to the way things happen in the Magic Kingdom. It is a preparation for coming to a place where EVERYTHING is different.

The above posters are correct.

Saudis don't see it neccessary to keep people informed about the progress - if any - of an application. It's the norm to receive no correspondence at all, not even an acknowledgement of your intial application, and then suddenly to open your mail box to find a request for you to be in the Kingdom within weeks! This is not an exaggeration - it happened to me! The motto here seems to be: why do anything in good time, when you can simply do it at the last minute?
