Hi there, I was looking through the archives trying to find info on what kind of work there is available for someone with an MA in ELT and several years teaching in public schools overseas. I have QTS, but in primary ed, which I imagine is not acceptable in FE.

What would you be looking for if you had the MA and some experience? I have no CELTA though.

Thanks

You'll need the DTLLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector) or similar qualification to teach in FE or any post-compulsory institution including private providers. I think you'll need to redo your QTS year, however.

City and Guilds is not the only provider that offers the course, by the way.

I don't rate your chances at the moment. Besides qualifications, you need to have the contacts on the inside, or have worked with the particular school you are targeting in the past. Any vacancies that are advertised are usually swamped with applicants, but the successful candidate has often been chosen before the ad goes out. Advertising is just a formality. With an MA in ELT you could get a good job in the Middle East. Why not apply there? Although, with so many teachers in the market looking for work at the moment, it might even be hard to pick up something there. You won't know unless you try.

Your qualifications should get you a decent well paying job, but not in the UK. S&T is right about the job situation and even if you got a good job with a Uni you would be on 25-35K a year......now deduct tax...then national insurance..... then accommodation, transport and living costs and you will see how a tax free ME/ job abroad makes sense. I am not in the ME but my current salary and conditions would translate as something between 36-45K in the UK but then I would have fewer holidays and more work. UK is for retirement if you can afford it.

A CELTA/ CTESOL takes a month from a reputable provider and costs are reasonable. Worth it in some places even though you have an MA ELT

Jobs in Uk are difficult to find. Many are part-time, short-term. The Middle East awaits you.

Where's the best place to look at ME jobs anyway? Any links?

An MA in ELT negates the need for a CELTA in the UK, provided you have ELT experience (it's kind of difficult to pick up one without the other).

Any chump can get a CELTA; it's practically meaningless.

Conversely, someone with QTS and the DTLLS qualification would have a far better chance of picking up some kind of teaching work in the FE/post-compulsory state sector in England than with a CELTA - OFSTED/DfES rules preclude holders of CELTA/DELTA/Master's qualifications from obtaining a post in said sector without them at least working towards the DTLLS qualification. Holding one will make recruiters' lives easier, and thence improve your job prospects. Scotland is different in this regard - providers are still able to set their own criteria for employment in student-facing roles (outside of the ubiquitous background check), although it's by no means easier to find reasonable work.

The Middle East is great if you want money, although you'll never fucking catch me teaching out there, for various reasons.

Sadly not. I just have no desire whatsoever to teach there.
